Very much overdue, but we're happy to bring you a new EP by a new name containing 3 beautifully polished gems.
Born and raised in London, but now residing in Brighton, Spikes is the alter-ego of longtime-producer Toni Gray. Earning her production stripes through her work with sample-library Loopmasters, she's now letting the world hear what she cooks up on her own time in her attic studio.
First track 'Bacon' is an off-kilter trip through inner-space accompanied by tour-guide, Tony Gray. In a serendipitous moment, our Toni Gray found the other Tony Gray discussing the meaning of life, bacon and other important issues on Youtube and decided the odd and happy coincidence of finding some guy with the same name as her discussing the meaning of life would make for a good track. She was right, we think.
Second track 'Reality Check' by contrast is a more linear, slow-burn rumbler, and an effective showcase of Toni's attention to detail: sinuous shifting bass weaves its way through lattices of skittering drums, while subtle atmospheric touches abound.
If 'Reality Check' hinted at shadowy spaces, then final track 'The Sentence' ushers in the dark to round off proceedings: with touches of grime, this is a tense, brooding uptempo beats n bass affair, laced with a hint of menace.
